Introduction of RPM

Recording Performers Malaysia Berhad (RPM), a company limited by guarantee, duly incorporated under the Companies Act, 1965 is a legitimate organisation recognised by Malaysia Government [specifically Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO)] in Malaysia representing recording artistes and musicians. A non-profit organization, RPM is fully transparent to represents the interests of a large group of individual stakeholders, namely local and national recording performers, with a democratic stakeholder election process in line with international best practice.

With effect from 1 June 2012, the Copyright (Licensing Body) Regulations 2012 came into force in Malaysia whereby all new and existing Collective Management Organisations (CMOs) need to apply for declarations to commence or continue with collective licensing operations for and on behalf of their authorised members. No CMO would be allowed to carry out any collection without a certificate of declaration by MyIPO to act as a Licensing Body. With the above, RPM submitted its application to comply with the legislative changes. MyIPO officially announced in March 2013 that three companies are the recognized legitimate licensing body namely Music Authors’ Copyright Protection (MACP) Berhad representing composers, lyricist and publishers; Public Performance Malaysia (PPM) Berhad representing recording companies and RPM representing recording performers.
